Meet Big Bear’s latest condor resident Sunny and Gizmo
Friends from Big Bear Valley have announced the names of the two newest vultures of the mountain – Sunny and Gizmo.
The Eagles hatched in early March and are descendants of Big Bear’s famous vulture couple Jackie and Shadow.
Friends of Okura Valley revealed their Tuesday afternoon name through Facebook posts.
After winning a naming contest with more than 54,000 entries, the list was narrowed to 30. Students from Xiong Primary School voted for the winning name from the selected list.
“Meet Sunny and Gizmo,” the nonprofit said in a Facebook post. “After the wonderful but long process of choosing a name for Jackie and Shadowed Cute Chicken, the bigger chick is now named Sunny, while the smaller chick is now named Gizmo.”
The group will contact the winners of the competition next week and receive a certificate of recognition. There are multiple winners because these names are submitted by different people.
Despite the third Eagles hatched with the sunny Kitty Hawks, their names are not part of the competition. Last month, the baby eagle did not survive the snowstorm. The group said the eagle’s name was named Misty by Okuratani’s friend in honor of Kathi Misterly, a dedicated volunteer who lost his life.
