Practice Just two weeks after a massive exercise in mid-March, Beijing sent a large number of drones and ships to the island.
The Taiwan Affairs Office says these exercises are targeted relyTaiwan’s strong independent president.
“Lai Ching-te insisted on the ‘Taiwan independence’ position, boldly labeled the mainland as ‘foreign hostile force’ and proposed a so-called “17-point strategy … inciting anti-China sentiment and proposing an anti-China perspective,” China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said in a remark on Tuesday that we will be unquestionable.
In mid-March, Taiwan’s LAI proposed a 17-point strategy aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s national security. These points include allowing military courts to try espionage cases and making stricter immigration rules for Chinese citizens applying for permanent residence.
Lai’s words and actions seemed particularly angered Chinese leader Xi Jinping, whose previous attempts to intimidate had little effect on the Taiwanese public. These are often timed according to the expression of Taiwan independence, including the visit of then-U.S. House leader Nancy Pelosi.
China’s new propaganda
China’s PLA has also released a series of videos to promote their military exercises, which include portraying the island as green parasites portrayed as “poisoning” by hatching smaller parasites. Beijing sends fighter jets and naval ships to the island every day in an attempt to wear Taiwan’s defense and morale, although the vast majority of the island’s 23 million people reject its claims of Taiwan’s sovereignty. In recent years, it has Strengthened the scope and scale of these exercisesfrom sending a small number of single fighter jets and surveillance aircraft to groups that send aircraft, drones and ships.
Zhang Qi, a professor at the National Defense University of China, said: “The PLA organized the navy and air force to practice topics such as marine and land strikes, focusing on testing the troops’ ability to conduct precise strikes on the Taiwan authorities from multiple directions.”
Taiwan and China split in the civil war 76 years ago, but tensions have intensified since China cut off almost all contact with Taipei in 2016.
