Maine Cross-Athlete Fight: Laurel Libby Responds to Justice Department Referral
Maine may face the Justice Department consequences as it continues to refuse to ban trans athletes from women’s sports, while lawmakers who are aware of the state in the state are under pressure.
On Friday, Rep. Laurel Libby, Republican Maine, blamed Gov. Janet Mills and Democratic legislators in the state, said it transferred Maine’s “violations” with Title IX rules.
“Refusal of Governor Mills and the Democratic majority to comply with the protections of the Federal Title IX has now led to the formal transfer of Maine to the Department of Justice. This is a direct result of their radical policies that put ideology ahead of its fairness and security in Maine and the education of our students.

“Democrats believe in the rights of women and girls in sports and space, in common sense, fairness and protection. While this extreme stance does not reflect the values of our country, it will ultimately suffer the consequences of reckless decisions and the consequences of ongoing disputes with biological reality.”
Libby has attracted national attention on transgender issues in her state’s transgender women’s sports in a social media post, which revealed that a transgender track and field athlete at Greely High School ranked first in the Maine women’s pole vault in a boys competition a year ago.
Trump administrator responds Maine is unwilling to ban trans athletes from girls’ sports
Libby’s revelation for trans athletes sparked a national conversation and reported on the state’s policy on transgender after Maine announced that it would not comply with President Donald Trump’s recent executive order “No Men in Women’s Movement”.
Trump then vowed to sign funds to the state after refusing to comply with his orders at the White House on February 20.
The next day, Mills’ office made a statement threatening a legal lawsuit against the Trump administration if the administration withheld federal funds. Then Trump and Mills spoke verbally in a widely publicized argument at the White House during a bipartisan governor meeting.
