Oahu doctor’s wife told police he tried to inject her into a syringe and slammed her head with a rock when she refused to take a selfie
An anesthesiologist has been charged with second-degree murder for alleged assaulting his wife on a hiking trail in Oahu, his first appearance in court after being arrested earlier this week.
Gerhardt Konig, 46, appeared in a district court in Honolulu on Thursday for a brief procedural hearing, where prosecutors presented a judicial ruling for possible causes, an affidavit that provided him with evidence.
According to the document, Konig’s wife told police she and her husband were hiking on the trail and at one time: “Gerhardt stood near the edge and asked her to take a selfie with him.”
The woman told police she was uncomfortable taking photos there, “so she refused and started going back.”
At that moment, she said, he began yelling at her, pushing her into the nearby bushes, “and then picked up a rock and hit her on her head about 10 times, while also grabbing the back of her hair and smashing her face to the ground,” the affidavit said.
She told police she yelled when she heard two other hikers and was able to start crawling towards them.
Konig’s wife said she observed him pulling out two syringes from his schoolbag and trying to use them on her, but she was able to keep them away from him, the affidavit said.
One of the hikers, a woman identified as “Amanda,” told the police that she heard someone shouting, “Help! Help me!” and started running. She said she found a woman and a man on the top of her and hit the woman’s head.
Amanda said the woman she met told her: “He tried to kill me. He hit me in the head with a rock,” the affidavit said. Amanda told police that the second hiker was called Sarah, known as 911.
The document says the woman was able to stay away from her husband and hikers, who were both able to move up the path and in the direction of help.
Police said she was in a “severe but stable state” when EMS arrived to transport her to the hospital.
The Honolulu Emergency Services Department confirmed it treated a 36-year-old woman with head and facial injuries after being beaten and she was severely transported to a local emergency room.
A hospital spokesman told CNN that there are currently no patients recognized by the woman’s name.
Konig’s preliminary hearing is scheduled to take place on Monday.
The judge set the bail at $5 million.
Konig’s lawyers declined CNN’s request for comment.
Police said they arrested Konig on Monday near the Pali Expressway seven hours after the attack.
According to the state’s professional career licence database, Konig’s Hawaii Medical License in September 2022, his Hawaii Medical License performed well as Tuesday night.
Konig was suspended from working at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was hired as an independent contractor, according to a representative from Maui Health.
“We have been aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD. Dr. Konig’s medical staff privilege at the Maui Memorial Medical Center has been suspended.
A representative from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center confirmed that Konig had worked here before, but said he had worked with UPMC for more than two years.
