ICE detains doctoral students from the University of Alabama in Iran

Earlier Wednesday, U.S. immigration and customs law enforcement officials (ICE) officials detained an Iranian University of Alabama doctoral student.

A doctoral student whose newspaper was identified as Alireza Doroudi, University of Alabama officials confirmed to Fox News Digital on Wednesday. He was detained at his home off campus earlier Tuesday by federal immigration authorities.

Doroudi, who is studying mechanical engineering, came to the United States through an F-1 student visa in January 2023 after “clearing all immigration inspections.”

The report noted that six months later, his visa was revoked, prompting him to contact the University’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISS).

“The International Space Station answered confidently that his case was not uncommon or problematic and that he could legally stay in the United States as long as he maintained his student status.”

The ICE database lists Doroudi as an Iranian native and confirms that he is in detention on ice, although the current detention center is not listed at this time.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told Crimson that he “posed significant national security issues.”

“Federal privacy laws limit what individual students can share,” the university wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital. “International students studying at the university are important members of the campus community and can use international student and academic services to help international students in doubt. UA has and will continue to comply with all immigration laws and cooperate with federal authorities.”

University officials did not respond to further inquiries from Fox News Digital whether the agency knew of the so-called expiration visa.

ICE confirmed Tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk arrested Fox News on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Ice was detained Tufts University Student Türkiye from Somerville, Massachusetts.

University president Sunil Kumar told Fox News Digital that the university learned that an international medical graduate student was detained by federal authorities in Somerville off-campus apartment building.

Unlike the University of Alabama, the school’s principal confirmed that the school “had not been aware of the incident in advance and had not shared any information with federal authorities before the event.”

Kumar also verified that Tufts was told that Ozturk’s visa had been terminated and leadership was allegedly verified.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told Fox News Agency agencies and ICE investigations that Ozturk “has been engaged in activities to support Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that loves to kill Americans.”

Ozturk’s lawyer told Fox News she has one Valid F-1 visa status There were no charges against her before she was arrested.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January to withdraw student visas from Hamas supporters, a “an unprecedented wave of evil anti-Semitism, intentional destruction and violence against our citizens, especially in our schools and on our campuses.”

Tufts received $115.2 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health as of fiscal year 2025, according to the university’s website.

The University of Alabama received $143 million in federal grants, according to its 2023-24 annual financial report.

DHS and ICE did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on Doroudi’s detention.
