Google Play will offer user-choice billing in the UK
Get another rating in regulatory review. After a 2022 Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) survey, Google said on Friday it added the UK to countries that support users to choose billing. This allows Android developers across the country to allow users to pay for in-app purchases using an alternative billing system.
Google said the UK will receive user-choice billing starting March 29. It will start with a non-game app that fits with how Google handles these launches in other regions. Regions that replace billing include the United States, Japan, Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa and the European Economic Area (EEA) markets.
Developers who join the program can only offer alternative payments, not in place of Google Play billing. They will receive a 4% discount on Google’s service fee.
This move is closely related to national regulations. In 2023, the company will choose billing float as a concession to help resolve the UK CMA antitrust investigation that began the previous year.
Although Google acknowledged the impact of CMA on its decision in the announcement, the company structured the move in its blog post as (in this case, developers) what they might want.
