Dozens of workers trapped in the collapse of Bangkok building after Myanmar earthquake

A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing officials to declare a state of emergency in Myanmar and Bangkok the capital of neighboring Thailand.

At least two people were killed after the earthquake caused the capital’s 30-storey building to collapse, and 43 construction workers remain missing.

Fifty people are inside buildings in the Chatuchak Park area.

The National Institute of Emergency Medicine said in a Facebook post that seven people were rescued from the ruins of the collapsed building.

A video circulated on social media showed the swing of the multi-layered structure and collapsed as onlookers screamed and ran.

Prime Minister Paetontarn Shinawatra said on Friday that Thai authorities have announced a major earthquake strike on the city.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake was shallow and had a depth of 10 kilometers. Its center is located near the Burmese city of Sagaing, close to Mandalay.

The second earthquake, with an amplitude of 6.4, shocked the area after 12 minutes.

In Myanmar, state-owned MRTV said the military government declared a state of emergency in six regions and states.

The country has no immediate reported casualties, many areas there are not easy to reach, and the government is involved in the civil war after the 2021 coup.

Photos and videos show that the earthquake damaged part of the former palace and a nearby building near the epicenter of Mandalay.

A 90-year-old bridge collapsed in the Siegh Mountain area as part of the expressway connecting Mandalay to Yangon was damaged.

The earthquake caused alarms to be issued in Bangkok’s buildings, and thousands of residents were transported to the streets along the stairs of high-rise apartments and hotels. Videos on social media show people gathering on the streets of the Thai capital.

The tremor is powerful enough to tilt the pool out of the pool, and some rise high as the tremor sways.

More than 17 million people live in the Greater Bangkok area, many of whom are in high-rise apartments.
