Archaeologists recently announced the discovery of bones in the Williamsburg colony – but the bones did not come from the Revolutionary War.
The remains were found when the gunpowder magazine of the Revolutionary era or the excavator of the storage facility was found on the searched excavator, according to the Associated Press. (See the video at the top of this article.)
Near the building, archaeologists discovered the eye sockets of the human skull, followed by four human skeletons, plus three amputated legs.

These four skeletons did not return to the United States colony, but came from the Civil War era. According to local historians, soldiers died in the Battle of Williamsburg and fought for the Confederacy in 1862.
The arms of the bones were found crossed. Interestingly, they were not buried in uniforms – instead they were found wearing more comfortable clothes, with archaeologists finding buttons and trouser buttons.

The tombs are aligned, with the head at the west end and the feet at the east end, which is a Christian tradition of funeral.
Since its discovery, historians have determined that temporary hospitals have been operating nearby to treat injured Confederate soldiers.

Although the body was discovered in 2023, Williamsburg colonial officials did not announce the discovery until this month.
Archaeologists are working to identify the unknown soldier.

The researchers narrowed down the possible identities of four men serving in the Legion of Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina and Virginia, but held names until they were confirmed.
Jack Gary, executive director of Williamsburg’s colonial archaeology, told the Associated Press that when they found a list of hospital patients in the archives, they found it converged.

Last week, the bodies were reinculcated on the local funeral ground where other Confederate soldiers were buried.
