Apple’s Airpods Max gets lossless audio support

Apple’s Airpods Max will be much better soon.

Apple said in a Friday announcement that its streamer headphones have gained support for lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio through an April software update.

This is a pleasant surprise when many owners may give up on getting lossless audio on Airpods Max. Apple initially launched its flow-ear headphones in 2020, followed by a slightly updated model in 2024. But while the company has been providing lossless audio in Apple Music since 2021, the AirPods Max has not received support for the feature — until now.

Mixable light speed

In short, lossless audio means better sound, although it does come at the expense of more bandwidth. This may be the reason why the feature cannot be used when using AirPods Max wirelessly. AirPods Max will support lossless audio up to 24-bit, 48 kHz quality.

As for ultra-low latency audio, this is a feature that musicians can use to record and mix music when using AirPods Max.

To take advantage of lossless audio, AirPods Max owners will have to connect to their iPhone, iPad, or Mac using a USB-C cable. The feature will be available as part of iOS 18.4, iPados 18.4 and Macos Sequoia 15.4, when the update was available in April.
