President Trump said Friday he liked the idea of the United States joining the Commonwealth, after a report saying King Charles III would make an offer.
“I love King Charles,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday morning while linking an article citing the Daily Mail report that the monarch will secretly provide U.S. vice-presidents of the U.S. federal during Trump’s second state-owned visit to the UK. “Sounds good to me!”
Trump also reissues the same report on the King’s “secret” proposal for “members” in the early hours of Saturday.

The Commonwealth, founded in 1926, consisted of 56 countries, including Australia and Canada, most of which were originally British colonies. The monarch was the head of the Commonwealth and his maintenance was a major priority for Queen Elizabeth II.
Members are voluntary.
Before winning independence after the Revolution, the United States was part of the British Empire.
After gaining independence in 1947, India was the first country to decide to stay in the Commonwealth.

Trump has a friendly relationship with the late Queen and always highly praised her.
Trump told Fox News in 2023 Mark Levin of “This is a woman… 75 years, she never made mistakes during her reign, but she never made mistakes.” “I know her very well, you know her in the 90s, I’m great, but she’s great, but she’s great, she knows her very well. She’s very well in her 90s, and she never made mistakes, I’m great.”
Trump also praised Charles and Prince William, the heir to the throne, who met him in December in Paris, but he had less to say about Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.
King Charles’ letter reveals Trump accepts a second state-owned visit to Britain
The president plans to meet with King Charles on a rare second state visit later this year. During his first Congressional visit in 2019, he met with the late Queen and Charles.
The Daily Mail said Commonwealth membership first surfaced during Trump’s first term, this time with the hope that it would ease tensions between the United States and Canada as the country threatens trade tariffs.

“This is discussed at the highest level,” a member of the Royal Federal Association told the Daily Mail. “It would be a wonderful move, symbolizing the close relationship between Britain and the United States,” he said.
“Donald Trump loves Britain and has a great respect for the royal family, so we believe he will see the benefits of this. Hopefully, colleagues will follow the formal members and make the Commonwealth more important as a global organization.”

Later last month, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer presented Trump with Charles’ second state visit, while two politicians met in the Oval Office.

Trump replied: “The answer is yes. On behalf of our wonderful first lady Melania and myself, the answer is yes, we look forward to being there, respecting the king and respecting your country. Your country is an amazing country.”
