General Motors and Hyundai are reaching an agreement on a partnership that will allow Hyundai to offer two electric commercial van models to General Motors in North America, according to Reuters.
South Korean automakers in exchange may receive pickup trucks from GM under Hyundai brands in the region, according to Hyundai documents reviewed by the news agency.
Discussions include a range of collaborations, including joint purchases or developments in areas such as computing chips, next-generation batteries and battery materials.
The negotiations are driven by competition from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers and the looming threat of the global trade war, prompting these companies to consider sharing products to reduce spending.
Under the proposed arrangement, Hyundai will produce two electric van models for itself and the GM brand, initially importing them from South Korea and then transferring production to North America by 2028.
To produce trucks in North America, Hyundai is exploring the possibility of building new factories, expanding existing facilities or outsourcing production.
In terms of pick-up, the discussion focused on GM sharing of mid-type trucks with Hyundai.
Although Hyundai has expressed interest in GM’s full-size pickup truck, the option has not been proposed by GM.
The collection agreement is expected to take longer to complete compared to the commercial van agreement.
In addition to trucks and trucks, Hyundai may also offer General Motors to strengthen Brazil’s lineup.
Hyundai Motor had previously announced in January 2025 that it is in talks with GM to provide electric commercial vehicles as part of a preliminary agreement to explore cooperation in automobiles, supply chains and clean energy technologies.
