Injured woman died in a vandalized van after police officers were towed away, $50 million claim says
The case began most cases when San Diego police investigated a 2023 crash when suspected drunk drivers were farmed onto a parked van.
The driver was arrested, the van was towed, placed on the lock and in the local seizure yard.
However, police should investigate further, based on a $50 million claim against New York City.
Monica Cameroni de Adams, a 65-year-old mother, Monica Cameroni de Adams, was homeless and sleeping in the middle row when hit.
It was not until a month later that an employee in the trailer yard noticed a “irritating odor” from the damaged 2001 Holiday Odyssey and found the body of Cameroni de Adams.
“In our assessment, she died some time after the impact and could have died in the trailer tract,” said John Carpenter, attorney for the company Carpenter and Zuckerman, who now represents the family of Cameroni de Adams. “The officers and trailer operators failed to adopt any inventory, or see if there was a living person inside.”
The claim was a pioneer in the lawsuit filed by Cameroni de Adams’ children, saying police were careless and reckless when they failed to see the van, and noticed that Cameroni de Adams “had suffered severe but survivable blunt force injuries, needed collisions, and needed medical assistance.”
According to the claim, the crash occurred on November 5, 2023, just after 1 a.m. in the 5000 block of Claremont Avenue in San Diego.
A spokesman for the San Diego Police Department and the city said they were unable to comment on the potential lawsuit.
A collision report included in the claim states that the crash sent the van forward and it collided with another parked vehicle. The crash reportedly pushed the back door of the van toward the middle row where Cameroni de Adams was sleeping.
It is unclear at this time when officials and why trailer operators found Carmeni de Adams inside the van, Carpenter said. He said the human-body camera lens for the incident had been requested, but has so far been rejected by the city.
“The excuse to have them not do a rough check to see if anyone is inside is zero,” Carpenter said.
Reports of the incident include the incident, noting that driver Jordan Lopez moved the van backward, seemingly speaking, and had difficulty standing while police spoke to him.
Since then, Lopez pleaded guilty to DUI, causing serious physical harm.
The report noted that two parked vehicles involved in the crash were towed “to avoid further damage.” The report did not state how officials tried to reach owners, including the owner of the van, Cameroni de Adams.
The report did not state whether the officer looked inside the vehicle before towing it.
On November 14, 2023, Natalia Danielle Cameroni-Adams submitted a report of missing persons to her mother trying to wish her a happy birthday, but she didn’t hear it.
According to the claim, three weeks later, it was found that Cameroni de Adams was “welded under other items in the vehicle” on December 6.
The autopsy report noted that she suffered several injuries, including a fractured rib, a fractured spine and a fractured arm. According to the report, the most likely cause of injury is blunt force trauma.
