I worked as recruiters at Tiktok, Google and Uber. This common resume error may be why you haven’t heard it.

One of the biggest resumes she sees is people talking about their responsibilities, not the outcome of their work.
This article is based on Farah SharghiShe is a job search coach and former technical recruiter and she has estimated to have conducted thousands of interviews with technology companies such as Google, Tiktok, Uber and Lyft. It has been edited to extend length and clarity.
Whether it’s used in technical work or other industries, what I see most is that people don’t realize the system they are in.
If you are applying for a company job, you must know where the company makes money. They are not providing services there.
I mean people come to me and they say they want me to rewrite my resume and I’m so happy to do that. But I’ll look at their old resumes, and it’s just a list of what they do without any business outcomes.
I left, “So, what have you done at work?”
“Well, I did, I did,” they would say.
OK, OK, Why?
If you are going to exchange labor for money, you have to ask yourself from the employer’s perspective, why do you do all these things and what are the outcomes of your work?
Many people don’t really understand this.
It’s an eye-opening experience for clients when working with them. They begin to realize that their labor is worth it, and if it is worth the money, they must be able to communicate it to themselves and they must also communicate with other companies.
They do this through their resume and interview process. Then, when they work, they understand the value of their labor relative to the work they do for the company they work for.
This is the general topic on many resumes I’ve seen.
When I work with people, I try to pull from them like “Listen, to get me to write the most effective resume for you, I need other details because if I just put someone else’s name on your resume, anyone can say they did your job.”
So, what makes you unique? Why do companies hire you? What business are you actually trying to solve? What businesses do they need to solve?
If you can’t answer these questions, you’ll take advantage of them in the market.
