“Fallas are about criticism and irony, but always respect. They naturally have to refer to politics and current affairs, which is why they criticize everything we think we are wrong, but have an ironic perspective.”
Visitors and locals visited the Fallas Festival held annually in the Valencia region, where sculptures, some of which are satirical scattered throughout the city, then caught fire.
The giant figure of the valencian word of the doll, or “Ninote”, is usually made of wood, plaster and pulp over a few months.
Valencia regional leader Carlos Mazon and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez were the numbers at this year’s event.
This year’s festival has a cathartic aspect, which prompted rivers to overflow in Valencia and other parts of Spain following rain and flash floods, killing more than 200 people and destroying houses and property in October 2024.
The winner of this year is Fallera, a Valencian woman dressed in traditionally, and a worker covered in dirt, referring to the effects of the storm.
