Cross-athlete abuse allegations have not stopped CBC from winning CCAA title

The dispute over trans competitors has not stopped the Columbia Bible College (CBC) from going all the way this year.

CBC won the Canadian University Athletic Association women’s basketball national championship on Saturday night, beating St. Mary’s University 77-70 to win the championship for the first time in the history of the show.

For CBC, Elissa Vreugdenhil won the CCAA Championship MVP, scoring 19 points with 12 rebounds in the win. Grace Park scored 20 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while Madeline Beerwald scored 20 points with 8 rebounds.

The victory was not only the first national champion in CBC history, but also marked a dramatic turnaround two years ago, as the program suffered a 54-game winning streak from 2018 to 2023. The program didn’t even win the game before this season.

However, the team also did all this in the shadow of allegations related to the treatment of trans athletes. Taylor Claggett’s head coach Taylor Claggett was suspended and the team lost the right to host a conference tournament after allegations of abuse against a trans athlete at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in October.

The hatred began on October 25th between the two teams, which won a game-high 19 points for Trans player Harriette Mackenzie 69-56. Five days after the game, the trans athlete posted an Instagram video accusing Claggett of “bent over one of our athletes and doing tirades about me not being allowed to play.”

Mackenzie was allegedly fouled by CBC players. In response, Claggett posted his own statement on Instagram, claiming Mackenzie’s statement was inaccurate.

“My intentions have nothing to do with a particular athlete, but the safety of female athletes in sports,” Claggett wrote.

Viu then filed a formal complaint to Pacwest, prompting an investigation. VIU refused when the two teams were scheduled to play again on January 10 and 11.

“Intimidation, harassment and discrimination have no place in track and field,” VIU said in a statement to Fox News Digital in January. “VIU fully supports our student-athletes and confirms the right of all athletes to compete in an environment where their safety and well-being are prioritized.”

VIU requires that these two forfeitures are not considered losses in the team records granted by Pacwest.

“It is simply unreal and misleading to charge CBC, its coaches, players and fans as a threat to safety,” CBC provided a statement to Fox News Digital, noting over the weekend.

A few days later, CBC players condemned Mackenzie in a letter obtained by Fox News Digital.

CBC players accuse Mackenzie of “personal assault,” “slanderous comments,” and even “inciting violence” against their coach.

“In the past three months, videos and letters posted by members of the VIU women’s basketball team have directly violated several rules as described in Section 17.2 of the manual. Various posts include ‘personal attacks’, defamenative comments, ‘lack of respect for PacWest’ and lead to ‘comments on violence and/or hatred of our coaches,’

“All all charges raised by VIU players regarding our team and coaches should be communicated directly with Pacwest officials and should not be uploaded publicly to social media.”

Pacwest eventually supports Viu and Mackenzie. It suspended Claggett in early February, and CBC lost the right to host the Pacwest Championship.

CBC has been fighting in the PacWest Championship game that happened to be against Viu and Mackenzie on March 1. Mackenzie scored 21 points in that game, giving VIU a 69-59 victory, and then won the Conference Championship MVP at the post-match ceremony.

But VIU’s national championship hopes were quickly shattered after Wednesday’s first round loss to Mohawk Academy. Mackenzie’s Instagram account (the platform that initially shared the allegations against Claggett and CBC) was found to be deleted the day.

Meanwhile, while it’s often distracting this season, CBC has been running in an all-time tournament now.
