Mordor’s shadow of innovative enemy systems is locked behind patents until 2036
Warner Bros Discovery recently closed three game studios, including a highly respected overall production. This put the coolest game mechanics of the 2010s in a dilemma. Middle Earth: The Shadow of Mordo According to the report EUROGAMER.
Nemesis System in 2014 The shadow of Moldo and follow-up Middle-earth: Shadow of War. In short, it is a game mechanic where enemies remember their previous encounters with the protagonist. These confronters are usually orcs in LotR games, which use these humiliating memories to inspire their desire to take revenge on promotion. There are two ways for this mechanic, too, so the enemy will remember to defeat you in previous encounters.
This is the best part of both titles, Monolith plans to bring the mechanic back to the now-realized Wonder Woman game. Now, the system is unused and is locked behind a patent vault in David Zaslav’s giant yacht or anywhere else. Huge multinational companies are great!
Warner Bros Discovery patented the system in 2016, you can read it here. The patent will only be active until 2036 as long as the company complies with the relevant fees. It is worth noting that it has been used only for a single game in the nine years since the system was patented. That’s it Shadow of War, It was released in 2017 and was already under development when Warner Bros continued to obtain patents.
Whether Warner Bros Discovery will do anything to the Nemesis System remains to be seen. There are 9 years of heavy game development using it throughout the IP portfolio, but that’s not the case. During that period, a lot of Batman games and Hogwarts Legacy all come out. These will certainly benefit from unique mechanics. Oh well.
WB will still focus some resources on game development, but the company’s efforts will be primarily used in four franchises. These include Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC Universe and Game of Thrones. Three of these four seem to fit well for the nemesis system to me.
