Technically, tonight’s speech wasn’t “the state of the alliance.” They usually avoid the title this time, as the president only serves for a few weeks.

Interestingly, nothing in the Constitution requires speech.

Article 3, Article 2 of the Constitution says: “The President shall provide Congress with information about the status of the alliance from time to time.”

President George Washington made his first such speech in New York, but President Thomas Jefferson stopped it. He thought it was too much like a speech in the crown.

Until the early 20th century, the “State of Alliance” was a written document. At that time, President Woodrow Wilson resumed speech customs after 112 years of dormant.

President Calvin Coolidge was the first person to deliver an ITU speech on radio in 1923.

However, the broadcasting tradition did find its place in the 1930s.

The theme of Trump’s speech to Congress reveals

Franklin Delano Roosevelt mastered the radio during the Great Depression and World War II with his “fireside chat.” In his ITU message, this continued.

President Bill Clinton gave a speech on the internet in the mid-1990s.

Sometimes the speech itself is not remembered – it is an extracurricular activity.

Lenny Skutnik, an employee of the Congressional Budget Office, famously fell into freezing water to rescue passengers.
