Video storage
It is important to keep shots of an intruder or a porch pirate (or similar issues). Even cheap doorbells often come with subscription options, storing videos in the cloud (usually a few dollars a month). Some people have local storage options, and if you want to avoid these ongoing expenses, take a closer look at the details.
Artificial Intelligence Identification
Object recognition using AI-powered features is especially useful for video doorbells, allowing gadgets to identify packaging, people, animals, and vehicles and send you only alerts about important content. In our experience, doorbells usually catch joggers and pet-owners, but good recognition avoids alerts to vehicles and animals to save you stress. Some companies retain object recognition after subscriptions, while others include it for free.
Smart home compatibility
If you already have a security system or a preferred voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, be sure to look for a video doorbell that you use with your current selection. Amazon brands tend to limit doorbells to Alexa only. Compatibility between Apple Siri and Apple Home is particularly hard to find here, especially for budget options.
Wired and wireless
Battery models are easier to place, but sometimes (not always) more expensive. Wired models are usually the best way to save. We found two options to choose from at a reasonable price.
Audio quality
If you like the idea of talking from a doorbell, look for ideas with effective two-way audio, preferably noise-removing or similar properties. We test the audio quality of each doorbell we view to make sure you can have a conversation.
Vision and solutions
Video doorbells don’t require a particularly wide view, but if they face a large front yard, they can have a great quality. Plus, higher resolution makes it easier for you to see your face and other important details, so it’s nice to find models that are at least HD.
